Milwaukee premiere of "Quiet in the Land" opens at Stritch on Feb. 17

The Cardinal Stritch University Theater Department will present the Milwaukee premiere of "Quiet in the Land" by Anne Chislett on Feb. 17, 18, 24 and 25 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 19 and 26 at 2 p.m. in the Studio Theater.

Winner of the Chalmers Canadian Play Award and the Governor General's Award, this eloquent drama deals with the tension and disputes which beset an Amish community in Ontario when one of their young men defies his elders and goes off to fight in World War I.

Jacob (Yock) Bauman, a young member of an Amish community near Kitchener, Ontario, chafes at the strict beliefs of his elders, particularly those of his father, Christy.

World War I is raging in Europe, and most of Canada's young men have gone off to fight with the British forces, but the Amish, because of their pacifist convictions, have refused to join the war effort. By deciding to enlist, Yock alienates himself not only from family and community, but also from the lovely Katie, with whom he has fallen in love. When Yock returns from the war Kate has wed someone else and, ironically, the very acts of bravery which have made him a hero to the rest of Canada have made Yock a bloody-handed villain to his own people.

Tickets are $12 for general admission, $10 for senior citizens and $6 for students. The Studio Theater is located in the Joan Steele Stein Center for Communication Studies/Fine Arts on the Stritch campus, 6801 N. Yates Road, Milwaukee. Ample free parking is available. For ticket information, call (414) 410-4171.

Exhibitions

Following Palindrome Series #2: Conversion by Pamela Diaz Martinez

On Display through March 30

The art of Pamela Diaz Martinez is alive with magical realism, detailed scenes of lifelike clarity with whispers of surreal circumstances that provoke a sense of otherworldliness. Martinez frequently uses her canvases to address the ever-present pull between the physical and the spiritual.

Painting Borges: A Pictorial Interpretation of His Fictions

On Display April 30 - July 13

Sixteen artists have created twenty-four pieces that reflect on the work of Argentinean author Jorge Luis Borges, one of the most important literary figures of the twentieth century. Like Borges' deeply philosophical texts, each piece of the installation prompts the audience to address fundamentals of human existence: identity and memory, freedom and destiny, and faith and divinity.

Painting Borges: A Pictorial Interpretation of His Fictions was organized by the University at Buffalo Samuel P. Capen Chair in Comparative Literature and Philosophy, Buffalo, New York and curated by Jorge J. E. Gracia.
The content of this exhibition may not be suitable for young audiences. Discretion is advised.

Exhibitions in the Latino Arts Gallery are open to the public Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. for a suggested donation of $1.
