Milwaukee premiere of "Quiet in the Land" opens at Stritch on Feb. 17
The Cardinal Stritch University Theater Department will present
the Milwaukee premiere of "Quiet in the Land" by Anne Chislett on Feb.
17, 18, 24 and 25 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 19 and 26 at 2 p.m. in the
Studio Theater.
Winner of the Chalmers Canadian Play Award and
the Governor General's Award, this eloquent drama deals with the tension
and disputes which beset an Amish community in Ontario when one of
their young men defies his elders and goes off to fight in World War I.
Jacob (Yock) Bauman, a young member of an Amish community near
Kitchener, Ontario, chafes at the strict beliefs of his elders,
particularly those of his father, Christy.
World War I is
raging in Europe, and most of Canada's young men have gone off to fight
with the British forces, but the Amish, because of their pacifist
convictions, have refused to join the war effort. By deciding to enlist,
Yock alienates himself not only from family and community, but also
from the lovely Katie, with whom he has fallen in love. When Yock
returns from the war Kate has wed someone else and, ironically, the very
acts of bravery which have made him a hero to the rest of Canada have
made Yock a bloody-handed villain to his own people.
Tickets
are $12 for general admission, $10 for senior citizens and $6 for
students. The Studio Theater is located in the Joan Steele Stein Center
for Communication Studies/Fine Arts on the Stritch campus, 6801 N. Yates
Road, Milwaukee. Ample free parking is available. For ticket
information, call (414) 410-4171. ___________________________________________________________________

spiritual.

destiny, and faith and divinity.
